European Commission proposes a declaration on digital rights and principles

Eu commission

The European Commission proposed on 26 January 2021 the Declaration on European Digital Rights and Principles, which outlines how the EU wants to apply its values and fundamental rights in the online world.

The declaration aims to protect people’s rights, support democracy and ensure safe cyberspace, while promoting and defending European values. Once endorsed by the European Parliament and Council, the document will become a point of reference for citizens, as well as a guide for policy-makers and businesses to promote a sustainable, human-centric vision for the digital transformation.

The draft enshrines six principles:

· Putting people and their rights at the centre of the digital transformation

· Supporting solidarity and inclusion

· Ensuring freedom of choice online

· Fostering participation in the digital public space

· Increasing safety, security and empowerment of individuals

· Promoting the sustainability of the digital future

As the declaration will also be used in the EU's relations with other international organisations and third countries, it will become a relevant tool to lead the digital transformation throughout the world and promote a digital transition shaped by European values.
