On 4 October 2022, the Council adopted the Digital Services Act (DSA), which, together with the Digital Markets Act (DMA), forms the basis of new EU-wide legislation for the digital economy.
The new regulation aims to make the online environment safer by protecting users' rights online and fighting the spread of illegal content. In particular, it defines clear responsibilities and accountability for providers of intermediary services, including social media, online marketplaces, large online platforms and search engines.
The text will be signed by the President of the European Parliament and the President of the Council, and then be published in the Official Journal of the European Union. The new rules will start to apply fifteen months after its entry into force.
