13th ASEM summit reaffirms the need for cooperation on digital connectivity

The 13th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM13) took place on 25 and 26 November 2021 via videoconference under the theme 'Strengthening multilateralism for shared growth'. The summit was hosted by the Kingdom of Cambodia and was attended by the Heads of State and Government and high-level representatives of 30 European states and 20 Asian partners.

On this occasion, leaders reaffirmed the importance of the partnership between Asia and Europe and discussed a range of topics including connectivity and digital transformation. In particular, they recognized 'the key role of digital economy in promoting inclusive economic growth, fostering digital transformation, bridging digital divide, building open, fair, secure and trusted digital environment.'

Additionally, they reiterated the need to strengthen Asia-Europe cooperation on digital connectivity with the aim to ensure 'a global, open, secure, stable, accessible and peaceful ICT environment.'

One of the main outcome documents adopted during the summit is The Way Forward on ASEM Connectivity, which pursues further cooperation in the context of digital connectivity.
