The challenge

Digital security helpline final frame at 0m33s

Individuals and organisations, specifically human rights defenders, activists, journalists, and civil society organisations worldwide, face significant digital security challenges. These include targeted cyber attacks such as hacking, phishing, and malware designed to steal sensitive information or disrupt their activities. They also contend with surveillance and interception of communications by hostile actors seeking to suppress dissent and curtail freedoms. The constant evolution of digital threats, coupled with limited resources and technical expertise, exacerbates their vulnerability, making robust digital security measures essential to protect their work and ensure their safety.

A response

To address these challenges, the Digital Security Helpline by Access Now provides specialised support to those at risk. The helpline assists in mitigating cyber attacks by offering tailored advice on preventing and responding to hacking, phishing, and other malicious activities. It helps improve digital security practices through training and resources, empowering users to proactively safeguard their information. In cases of security breaches, the helpline provides technical assistance, offering rapid-response emergency support to mitigate the impact of cyber threats, ensuring that affected parties can quickly resume their critical work.

Additionally, it offers guidance on securing communications and protecting privacy, helping to maintain confidentiality and integrity in their efforts to promote human rights and social justice. The security helpline operates 24/7 and offers support in nine languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Russian, Tagalog, Arabic, and Italian. Requests are addressed within two hours, and the service is free of charge. Through these comprehensive services, Access Now's security helpline plays a crucial role in enhancing the digital resilience of vulnerable individuals and organisations.

The Impact

By providing specialised support and resources to human rights defenders, activists, journalists, and civil society organisations facing digital security challenges, the Digital Security Helpline empowers them to continue their critical work in promoting human rights, social justice, and democratic values. By offering specialised support, resources, and rapid-response assistance, it enables individuals and organisations to express dissenting opinions, promote digital literacy, prevent harm from security breaches, and overcome linguistic and temporal barriers to support. In doing so, it strengthens the collective ability of civil society to defend against digital threats and uphold fundamental rights in an increasingly complex and interconnected digital landscape.
